Wendy's back continues to improve, so we thought we'd take a longer drive over past Salome and up the Harquahala Scenic Byway, a 4WD (well, 2WD mostly but high clearance) road up to the top of the highest mountain in southwestern Arizona. This was the site of an observatory back in the 1920's... click the link for more info. A few pics from the drive:
View from the bottom... flatland with fields of Saguaros.
Halfway up and you start to get some views.
Road's pretty easy except for the last couple miles.
Yep, that's where we're headed... up the switchbacks on the left
and then the ridge to the right.
On the way up Wendy spotted this Prickly Pear flower in the gully.
Didn't see it? How about now?
Yeah, nothing wrong with those new glasses of hers, I'd say.
Now we're gettin' up there...
OK, this must be the top.
Looking southeast. Phoenix is just off to the left.
South and maybe a little west.
In the centre you can see the road coming up the ridge.
To the west, some farm fields on the left.
That's where I'd stick the telescope if I were them.
Lunch and a little selfie practice...
And then back down the road again.
